Art
By Yasmina Reza
January 24 - February 17, 2008
Winner of the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play. Winner of the 1996 Olivier Award for Best Comedy.
How much would you pay for a white painting? Would it matter who the painter was? Would it be art? One of Marc's best friends, Serge, has just bought a very expensive painting. It's about five feet by four feet, all white with white diagonal lines. To Marc, the painting is a joke, but Serge insists Marc doesn't have the proper standard to judge the work. Another friend, Ivan, though burdened by his own problems, allows himself to be pulled into this disagreement. Lines are drawn and these old friends square off over the canvas, using it as an excuse to relentlessly batter one another over various failures. As their arguments become less theoretical and more personal, they border on destroying their friendships. The aftermath of action, and its reaction, affirms the power of those bonds. Presented in collaboration with the MSU Department of Theatre. Please note: this play contains adult language.
What the press says:
"The play features a trio of the finest actors Michigan has to offer... under the excellent direction of Tony Caselli... the set in another fine example of how this theatre's creative people wisely use the limited space they have available in the intimate theatre." - Jim Fordyce, MI Entertainment
"The play is brilliantly performed. Tony Caselli and the cast (Bruce Bennett as Yvan, Paul Hopper as Serge, John Lepard as Marc) have refined every moment of the play, physically and vocally, to a delightful level of precision and timing." - Robert Bethune, Encore Michigan
